Two men have been charged with a string of alleged driving offences after a suspected stolen car ploughed into a house on Wednesday. Christopher Champman, 29, and Jamie Lee Harvey, 26, are due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court to face the charges they have been accused of. Chapman, of Costa Street, in Ayresome, Middlesbrough , was charged with alleged aggravated vehicle taking, disqualified driving and other driving offences. Harvey, of Montrose Street, in central Middlesbrough, was charged with alleged aggravated vehicle taking. The incident happened on Ayresome Green Lane, in the early hours of Wednesday.

A black Mercedes smashed through road railings and a garden wall before ploughing into the living room of Francis and Sylvia Sayers. The couple, who have six children and 24 grandchildren, described how they were lucky to be alive. “It sounded like someone had fallen down the stairs,” said Mr Sayers, who is 55 and disabled.

“We could see the back of the car sticking out of window from the top on the stairs."

“I panicked because I’ve only got one leg so it’s hard enough as it is for me to get up and down."

The home next door, where one of the couple’s children lives with her family was also damaged in the smash. “Part of the wall smashed through their door so it’s had to be boarded up,” Mr Sayers said. “The grandkids have had to go elsewhere while it gets sorted.

“I’m just glad they were all in bed when it happened.”
