As Imperial Claims Consultants, we can help clients who have suffered from the insurance covered perils relating to building and / or contents. This week we have been focussing on how to keep your home safe. On our last post we talked about how to prevent fires from starting in your kitchen. Today, I would like to talk about some effective tricks you can use in order to deter burglars.

Most people think their homes are very secure and safe, probably because they don’t find spending money on expensive equipment to be a necessity. However, shouldn’t we try and keep our homes safe at any cost? Are we knowledgeable enough about cheaper alternatives to all those expensive equipments we can use to prevent burglars from breaking into our houses?

After reading this article, you will find that you can actually help to keep your house safe with these very simple, yet very clever steps:

Install dummy surveillance cameras – these can be very cheap.

Remove flyers from your door step – you’ll risk appearing like you're on holidays.

Keep your landscaping neat and trimmed – keep large bushes and shrubs away from windows.

Pretend you’re saying goodbye to someone inside when you leave your home – this might look and even sound a bit silly, but take a moment to think about the risks of doing this. Burglars sometimes case a home by planting a flyer and checking to see if someone picks it up.

Don’t leave ladders hanging out in your backyard – don’t make it easier for burglars to come into your home.

Don’t leave status updates on social media broadcasting that you are away – so many people have come into the habit of broadcasting their lives away on social media. Have you stopped to think about the implications of this?

These simple tricks can be put in practice immediately, without spending too much if not any money. Stay safe from burglars with these tricks.
