You would have had to be there to see and feel the destruction and environment lived at Rosslyn Avenue in Ryhope last Friday. The amount of emergency services, from firemen, to ambulances, not forgetting the police who were at the scene made the whole scenario look like it was coming straight from our TV's in what we would normally only see in the news. I was shocked to find out that the house was practically gone, as I approached the scene. Some witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people 'running all over, not knowing what to do.' Because life doesn't prepare you for these events. We never think it will happen to us. So we don't think about it, and because of this we don't know how to handle it. I can only imagine the pain and fear those involved in the explosion felt.
Other witnesses say that they saw the 'windows move and the house disappear' right before their eyes. Luckily, the woman involved in the accident survived, it is said thanks to a fridge that fell on her. On a Facebook post that same Friday, the victim's sister posted on social media: “The fridge fell on top of her and saved her life, she’s absolutely fine under the circumstances, she’s got minor burns to her back, face and arms and her hip might need stitching.”
Imperial Claims were at the scene and we took some heart-breaking photographs to report what was happening around us. Luckily, this was a story with a happy ending, as it could have been much worse for the victim, considering the circumstances and the state of her house. We are happy there were no major injuries and no one got severely hurt.
You can find the photos that we took on the scene of the incident below, by the end of this blog post.
Videos of the incident have been circulating the Internet since Friday, and the images really speak for themselves. You can find a video showing the moment the explosion took place below:
Our thoughts go to all of those involved in this dreadful incident.
