We found these guidelines on how to stop a house insurance claim from being rejected on an article on the 'telegraph'. We think these can be very useful, and we'd like to share them with you.

- Tempting though it may be with time at a premium, don’t bypass the terms and conditions including any alerts such as warning triangles on a website that can be clicked when you are taking out a policy. They may lead you to crucial relevant information.

- Accurately describe the material the home is built with. For example, a thatched roof.

- Comply with the security demands of the policy. These may include an accredited alarm system and locks on doors and windows.

- See that the safety features demanded such as smoke detectors are in place.

- Don’t leave the property empty for longer than the policy stipulates.

- Keep the home well maintained so that, in the event of a claim, the insurer cannot assert any damage is down to wear and tear.

- Declare earlier claims or those still being processed. Insurers can refer to databases to check such things out.

- Similarly answer any question about having had insurance refused truthfully.

- Specify any valuables worth more than the level set by the policy for individual items and don’t undervalue them.

- Don’t lapse cover between providers. One reader found some valuable watches were missing but she couldn’t say for certain when the loss had occurred and whether it had been during a gap of some months there had been between insurers.

The new insurer turned down the claim on the basis of the uncertainty about the timing of the loss. The claimant decided not to contact the previous insurer. Had there been no breaks in cover the insurers may well have worked out a happier resolution.
